Options for subscription boxes have grown significantly over the past few years, and I can say that I have flirted with a fair few. Some I’ve loved, but my satisfaction has been short-lived. That can be as a result of inconsistent selections, or simply because the box doesn’t meet my needs (I don’t wear much make up, for example). But I’ve stuck with My Little Box for a long now, and can’t see that changing any time soon. Here’s my review of the most recent boxes.
My Little Box Subscription
The My Little Box subscription costs £14.95 a month. For that you get a selection of products: three skin care or make up items, and three other items, ranging from homeware to jewellery and stationery. While I don’t love every item or indeed every box, this subscription has introduced me to my current favourite perfume (Courreges La Fille de L’Air) and some great moisturisers (My Little Box’s own brand My Little Beauty). It’s also stocked my bags with a variety of products from hand cream to journals.
Box Themes and Contents
Every box has a theme, and, like many subscribers, I suspect, I’m quick to repurpose the illustrated boxes about the house. Mine hold my stationery stash, and my small travel toiletries. Box contents are held in place with pretty ribbons ready for using again:
- great for gifts
- keeping your favourite pen sets together
- making pagemarkers for journals
- even keeping the plants tied up in the garden
What I really love too is the fact that most make up and skin care products arrive in a small cotton drawstring bag, all in cream with funky prints. These are brilliantly useful. Each box also has something arty, normally an A5 card that can be framed.
May 2017 Box
The past two months’ themes were Friday Night (May) and Los Angeles (June). Neither is my favourite of the boxes sent to date, but there’s been plenty to like and use. May’s box was probably a little too PAARTAY for an old adventurer such as myself, but I’ve still used most of its contents. The non make up items were a triangular hair slide and some funky coasters. There was also an unusual bow tie clip, designed to cover your bra when wearing something backless or low cut. I can’t see me going there, but I’m sure I can pass it on to a friend.
The make up and skin care items were:
- a tube of Crème Moana body cream in Tiare Flower (will last me about three weeks)
- a soft black eye pencil with smudger
- a coral red nail polish
I’m a big fan of the own brand My Little Beauty, and both their skin care and make up products have a good reputation with me.
June 2017 Box
The Los Angeles box that arrived today has a chilled out beach vibe. It contains an enormous cotton bag, great for shopping or as a beach bag. I have an earlier version from a couple of years back and I can verify that these bags are close to indestructible. Also included is a pretty bracelet in the deep jade and coral that seem to be the signature colours of My Little Box. Great to see it’s adjustable too, and easy to put on. There is a set of small puffy stickers with a California summer theme, which will doubtless hit my planner.
For the beauty products (and sadly no cotton bag this month – probably because of the big beach bag), there is a 50ml bottle of Palmers Coconut Oil body lotion. I love Palmers and will definitely use this, but the sample size is a little disappointing after the massive bottle of Mixa body lotion that arrived a few boxes back.
Also in this box is a bottle of My Little Beauty Coco Sunrise hair and body oil. This is a natural vegan product made with coconut oil and passion fruit which smells lovely. The final product is a Burt’s Bees (YAY!) soap bark and chamomile deep cleansing cream. I’m really looking forward to trying this one out.
June’s arty element is a fold out illustrated map of LA. I can see this covering one of my many travel journals.
Previous Box Favourites
When I think back over the previous box contents from this subscription, there have been a lot of memorable items that I use and love. Alongside that favourite perfume, I love the 2016 diary and undated goals journal that have featured in the past two January boxes. There’s a beautiful deep and starry pair of navy fingerless gloves/mittens, and a set of clear scrolled labels that adorn my kitchen jars. The vitamin shot face scrub is wonderfully efficient, and I regularly use the day and night creams. Someone with a great eye for graphics designs the own brand product packaging, which is beautiful in its simplicity. Small and beautifully executed pleasures.
